Sussex Art Projects

Community Interest Company ‘Sussex Art Projects’ was formed in April 2023, (formerly as Edgeland Modern).

In particular, the CIC will provide benefit to residents of Newhaven, East Sussex and the surrounding area.

The CIC’s activities will help emerging and established artists living in East Sussex and the surrounding areas. The CIC’s curatorial team will use experimental art project spaces in Newhaven and other locations to present regular exhibitions and events, and work with artists, writers and partners to create and develop new commissions, residencies, symposia and chat. The CIC will provide benefit to residents of the Newhaven and wider community by giving them the opportunity to view high quality modern art exhibitions and events, to engage with artists and to take part in future exhibitions and events.

Present regular exhibitions and events:

General public will be able to visit and enjoy the free exhibitions and events. The local community will be invited to the openings. The artists will often be present during the exhibitions and events to inform and engage with visitors. Artists need an audience and a relationship with the wider community. As art will be selected from the local area, the community has a unique opportunity to participate in and support the local artistic community, which in turn strengthens community spirit amongst the inhabitants as a whole. Artists, who often work in isolation, are able to network and gain useful information about other creative opportunities open to them. Various commercial buildings (which are expected to be in underused industrial areas) will house the exhibitions and events in an environmentally responsible manner. The exhibitions and events will increase footfall to the local area which will benefit local businesses providing refreshments. Marketing, and the exhibitions and events themselves will enhance the perception of Newhaven amongst the general public.

Work with artists, writers and partners to create and develop new commissions, residencies, symposia and chat:

Opportunities for artists and writers to network with fellow industry professionals. Enable artists and writers to form sustainable practices by sign posting to business support services and funding opportunities. Symposia on art and related matters involving artists and the local community. Increase involvement with stakeholders as regards on-going community projects. A platform to build relationships with decision makers. Increase ties between local artists and local businesses through sponsorship and other opportunities.
